Somontano Wine

The Somontano wine appellation, created in 1984, is located in the province of Huesca and near Barbastro, at the foot of the Pyrenees. There are 3 sub-areas in the denomination of origin: The Plains, The Somontano and The Hills, which spread over 43 districts. With about 4,700 cultivated hectares, Somontano has 518 vine-growers and about 32 wineries, which produce wines of excellent quality recognized by the most important wine guides.

The climate is characterized by cold winters and hot summers, and sudden changes in temperature in late autumn and spring. Not very fertile soils are brown and calcareous, with a good level of limestone, good sanitary conditions and permeability.

The white wines are produced from varieties of Macabeo, Garnacha Blanca, Alcañón, Chardonnay or Gewürtztraminer. Its classic red wines, usually well-structured, are made with Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Moristel, Pinot Noir, Syrah or Moristel.
